Fall Decorating your home doesn’t have to be hard. This week I am sharing the simple ways on how I updated our living room for autumn this year.

Moving from summer into fall is always busy and bittersweet. Days are getting shorter, flowers are fading, and kids are heading back to school. But you could look at it in a positive way too, days are cooler, spring bulbs are being ordered, and schedules are back! …and can we just mention that it’s apple season!

When should you start decorating for fall
Once the weather starts changing, usually early to mid-September I start thinking about and pulling out any fall decorations. I try to avoid adding anything before late August so that each season can be enjoyed for what it is and not have my decorations feel tired by the time Thanksgiving rolls around. It doesn’t have to be a lot to make the change from summer to fall, just a few new colors, smells, and textures to add to our homes. As the season changes outside, it is especially important for me to move that same feeling inside with subtle changes that involve all of the senses. To put it in one word: coziness.

Easy ways to cozy up your decorating this fall
- Comfy pillows, throws and rugs to warm up the room
- Vintage finds
- Moody, warm smelling candles
- Chang out artwork and wall pieces
- Create or bring in something handmade
- Fresh and dried florals…anything from nature!

How to start decorating for fall
The three simple things that I always do to get me started decorating, whether changing around a room or moving into a new season:
- Always start with the cleanest slate you can. I remove anything from the room that isn’t following the season, and then dust and vacuum everything.
- Choose a color palette and think about working it in the home for the shift in the season.
- Gather the pieces I want to use and lay them out in another room close by. I love trying to repurpose something I already have and make it fresh again.

My fall decorated living room
The best way to slowly bring in fall colors is through small pieces. These details are so important. Don’t get overwhelmed, just start by decorating one room at a time. In my living room, I removed everything from the mantle, coffee table, side tables, and anything on the sofa or chairs. Gathering from around my house and garden, I pulled anything that would have that autumn feel keeping in mind my color choices. This trunk is what inspired the bayberry!

Start by placing your bigger pieces around and then adding in the smaller touches. It may take a few tries, but you will know when you like it. I changed my mantle 3 times before being happy!
A wreath on the fireplace, a bundle of wheat is tucked in an old crock, and hydrangeas dried from the garden are placed in a wire basket with blue and white vintage quilts. Even yarn and little crocheted flowers became centerpieces. Out went the blue transferware and in came the brown. I moved a few mirrors and added vintage watercolors framed in bronze that I had in my attic. To keep motivated, light fall scented candles and place them around for added inspiration.
I changed the chair’s floral slipcover to a neutral one and added a knit throw and linen pillow. The sofa pillows stayed since they had all the right colors and textures. I just switched them so that the floral pillows were behind and the velvet French blue ones were on top. I still may add a plaid pillow. Wouldn’t that be pretty? Only if I can find the right fabric and color!

I hope you enjoyed this peek inside my living room and gathered a few cozy fall ideas for your home as well. Later this month I will be sharing my dining and kitchen decorating, as well as our front porch, along with a tutorial for creating a natural fall wreath and garland. Happy Fall!
Love,
