I have made these little heart shaped hand pies for my family for Valentine’s day since Lydia was a little girl.

I remember how excited Lydia would be when she came home from school and I had made these little hand pies shaped like a heart. She would call them her sweetie pies. (Why do they have to grow up and move so far away? …sigh)
These mini pies are so pretty and so easy to make. We always use cherry pie filling but any pie filling or jelly will do. Remember they don’t have to be perfect, make them for fun! Your family will love them any way they look!

I hope you enjoy this simple recipe. Such a sweet way to show your affection for someone you love.

”Life is short, eat pie!”
…and I try to as often as I can!

Directions for Mini Heart Shaped Hand Pies
Four simple ingredients are all you need for this recipe and cookie cutters. I use these cookie cutters but you can use anything. They need to be at least 3″ wide to accommodate a cherry or two.
Ingredients
- Pie Crust: Store-bought or Handmade. My two favorite brands of store-bought crusts are Trader Joe’s and Shurfine.
- Canned Pie Filling: Our favorite is from Aldi.
- Sanding Sugar, but regular sugar will do in a pinch.
- 1 cup Ice cold water
Directions
- Preheat oven to 400 degrees
- Roll out chilled crust on a lightly floured surface.
- Using your cookie cutter, cut out as many hearts as you can.
- Split your hearts into two rows. One for the top crust and one for the bottom.
- Take a teaspoon full of your cherry pie filling, making sure that you get at least one cherry, and place it on the center of your bottom crust pie hearts.

6. Using your fingers or a small baking brush, add cold water around the edge of the bottom crust.
7. Cover with the top crust and pinch down a little with your fingers.

8. With the tines of a fork, press around the edges of the hearts to seal, then use a small knife to cut a few small vents in the top of each heart.

9. Once you have them all done, transfer the mini-pies to a baking sheet lined with a silicone baking mat or parchment paper.

10. Brush a little more water on top, and sprinkle with sugar.
11. Bake in preheated oven for 12 minutes, until golden.

12. Let on a wire cooling rack for at least 15 minutes before eating. Enjoy!
